Zizipho Dyubeni Talks about the Cost of Cutting Corners when Building Paid Campaigns

Zizipho Dyubeni Talks Clicks, Culture, and the Cost of Cutting Corners when Building Paid Campaigns.

Zizipho Dyubeni, a Cape Town-based marketing leader and mompreneur, shared a hard truth recently: most brands expect explosive returns from their first paid campaigns. She argues that sustainable growth begins with slow, steady investment in brand awareness. Dyubeni spoke from her own experience, posting her advice online earlier this week on LinkedIn to reach digital brands across South Africa. She wrote the post because new advertisers often skip key steps and pay the price.

She explains that launching a campaign without setting up your digital โ€œhomeโ€ is like building a house on sand. You need clear user paths, intuitive navigation, and accessible content. โ€œA slick ad wonโ€™t matter if a user lands on a cluttered, confusing page.โ€ Dyubeni stresses that these basics act as a multiplier, not a delay.

Ziziphoโ€™s approach starts with awareness. She says brands must focus on brand recall before expecting conversions. The campaign should introduce the brand first, then drive interest and eventually action. She added, โ€œRetargeting works only when people already know who you are.โ€

She highlights that organic efforts, like social content and PR, lay the groundwork for paid efforts. She said, โ€œIf you’re chasing conversions without storytelling, youโ€™re setting your brand up for frustration.โ€ She urges marketers to build credibility organically before pushing ads.

Creative Teams and Data Need to Sync

Zizipho says performance data should guide creative updates and messaging. โ€œAds need to speak the language of your audience. Data shows what they care about,โ€ she noted. By looping in creative teams with real-time metrics, brands can iterate fast and reduce wasted spending.

  • Begin slowly. Test small before scaling big.
  • Audit your website. Make sure itโ€™s easy to navigate.
  • Plan your funnel. Donโ€™t expect conversion without awareness.
  • Align your channels. Organic, paid, creative, and data must work together.

โ€œPaid media isnโ€™t a magic switch. Itโ€™s a dialogue.โ€ Her advice applies to marketers, entrepreneurs, and business leaders. She hopes that brands will adopt this patient, data-aware approach.

Zizipho Dyubeniโ€™s message is simple but crucial: real growth isnโ€™t rushed. Whether youโ€™re a small business, a solo digital creator, or a big brand with big budgets, the rules stay the same: start with a strong base, earn attention before chasing clicks, and always let the data guide your next move.

โ€œPaid media isnโ€™t a magic switch. Itโ€™s a dialogue,โ€ she says. And in todayโ€™s noisy digital streets, the brands that listen, build trust, and stay consistent are the ones that win. So before you spend big, slow down. Lay the foundation. Connect. Then convert.

Applications are officially open for the RMB Latitudes CuratorLab 2025, a mentorship program tailored for early-career curators from across Africa. The initiative, now entering its fourth year, runs from 6 August to 15 October 2025 via an online residency. It is calling on 10 aspiring curators to shape their careers through mentorship, collaboration, and hands-on curatorial experience. Applications close 16 July 2025, and it all culminates with the launch of curated exhibitions on Latitudes Online from 5 November 2025.

Organized by Latitudes Online in partnership with Art School Africa, this program is not just another creative call-out. It’s an answer to a pressing need: the lack of accessible, practical curatorial training on the continent. With a specific focus on South African talent while welcoming voices from across Africa, the CuratorLab offers something rareโ€”real-world experience without the barrier of formal academic credentials.

“Too many gifted curators get overlooked because they don’t have traditional qualifications. CuratorLab is different. It focuses on talent, vision, and community-based impact,” said a representative from Art School Africa.

  • Weekly online workshops with peers from across Africa
  • The chance to conceptualise and execute a full exhibition online
  • A permanent curator profile on Latitudes Online
  • Exposure to over 21,000 subscribers via Latitudesโ€™ digital campaigns

Participants will also gain professional practice skills including:

  • How to position and market themselves as curators
  • Proposal and statement development
  • Key business and administrative skills

All curated shows will be hosted and sold through Latitudes Online, complete with logistics and sales support. Unlike many short-term programs, participants will also retain their online profiles post-program, allowing them to continue promoting their work and connecting with buyers and collaborators long after the exhibitions close.

“CuratorLab was the push I didnโ€™t know I needed. It sharpened my voice and introduced me to a community I still lean on today,” shared a 2023 participant from Johannesburg.

Beyond the technical side, the value lies in the connections. From weekly peer reviews to direct access to industry giants, participants become part of an active, resourceful network.

According to Latitudes, this yearโ€™s collaboration with Art School Africa, a non-profit dedicated to transforming art education, takes the program to a new level. The curriculum is deeper, the speakers more diverse, and the outcomes more aligned with the realities of working as a creative on the continent.
