The South African Reserve Bank has invested in a range of cutting-edge security features to protect its banknotes from counterfeiting and other fraudulent activities. These measures include multi-color intaglio printing, holograms, micro lettering, latent images, and serial numbers with embedded security fibers.

1. Security Thread

The South African banknotes feature a solid, fluorescent security thread that displays an uninterrupted horizontal line and is embedded in the note during production. This security thread glows under UV and Wood’s light when examined with appropriate filters.

2. Holographic Stripe

Another security feature present in South African banknotes is a vertical holographic stripe on the right-hand side of the note. The stripe includes small images of plants, animals, or objects native to South Africa that change color upon movement while being viewed under light.

3. Watermark

All the notes have a watermark, which is visible when held up to a light source. They resemble all denominations and features the symbol of their denomination as well as portraits of Nelson Mandela on different values and years of issue accordingly, denoting its authenticity and value respectively.

4. Serial Numbers

Each Banknote issued has a unique serial number imprinted in size 2 font embossed into it with slight differences visible on each denomination making it difficult for use of counterfeit money to be passed through fitting into currency production technologies used by banks and retailers alike.

5. Microprinting
