Stefan Wilson experienced a cracked vertebrae Monday evening when he and Katherine Legge crashed during Indianapolis 500 practice, the main occurrence on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Engine Speedway oval this month.
Monday night, Wilson’s team announced that he had fractured the 12th thoracic vertebra and would be admitted to IU Health Methodist Hospital for the night. The team is considering its options since he won’t be able to drive in the race on Sunday.
As they entered Turn 1, Legge appeared to run into Wilson’s back, crashing into the outside wall. Before transporting Wilson to the hospital, members of the safety crew placed him on a stretcher and stabilized his neck. He gave the crowd a thumbs up. After being examined at the IMS infield care center, Legge was given permission to drive after leaving her vehicle on her own.

“Vehicles in front were all looking up and I lifted however much I could, downshift and hit the brakes, yet it wasn’t sufficient,” Legge said subsequent to leaving the consideration place. She continued, “It’s another blow to the team, after yesterday.”
Legge’s best starting position for the struggling team, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, was 30th on the qualifying list. RLL group authorities said they wanted to fix Legge’s crashed vehicle in time for Friday’s Carb Day practice.
Justin Wilson, Wilson’s brother, was killed in a 2015 IndyCar accident at Pocono.
Graham Rahal, RLL’s lead driver who did not finish the race, said earlier on Monday that he would not try to ride with a teammate. Legge, Christian Lundgaard (31st), and Jack Harvey (33rd) are RLL’s race qualifiers. In Sunday’s qualifying, Legge knocked Rahal out of the race.
“You must acquire it here, and we didn’t procure it,” the veteran of 15 Indy 500s said. ” I don’t have confidence in that.”
Will Power set the fastest practice lap at 229.222 mph, followed by Takuma Sato and Scott Dixon at 229.184 mph. At 227.392, pole sitter Alex Palou finished fourth. Pato O’Ward communicated disappointment with irregularity between various tire sets, Rinus VeeKay’s vehicle supported an electrical issue and David Malukas additionally revealed mechanical issues.
Conditions in practice were comparable to those anticipated for the race on Sunday: Air temperature of 80 degrees, track temperature of 118 degrees, partly cloudy skies, and a light but variable wind.
