Netflix’s cloud gaming service is gradually expanding its presence in the United States, introducing an exciting avenue for subscribers to enjoy games on their smart TVs or via Chromecast devices, among others.

Mike Verdu, the Vice President of Games at Netflix, envisions this venture as an enhancement to your existing subscription rather than a replacement for traditional gaming consoles or personal computers. He emphasized that Netflix does not intend to supplant these established platforms, stating, “We’re not asking you to subscribe as a console replacement. It’s a completely different business model. The hope is that, over time, it becomes a seamless and natural way to enjoy games wherever you are.” Verdu shared these insights during an appearance at TechCrunch Disrupt.

It’s clear that Netflix’s gaming ambitions differ from the likes of GeForce Now, Luna, PlayStation, or Microsoft. For the moment, Netflix is generously offering its catalog of mobile games to subscribers without additional charges for playing on larger screens. However, the landscape may change as Netflix grows bolder and expands beyond mobile gaming, potentially venturing into the development of larger games utilizing its extensive portfolio of intellectual properties.

As for when South African audiences will have the opportunity to experience Netflix’s gaming library on their televisions, the exact timeline remains uncertain. Nevertheless, it’s reasonable to assume that the United States serves as a testing ground, allowing Netflix to refine the user experience before a global rollout.
