Google has dedicated extensive time to exploring the reasons behind the failure of habits. Contrary to common belief, the key factor is not ‘routine.’ Recently, a LinkedIn follower sought advice on boosting his business. Following Mark Cuban’s philosophy that “Sales cures all,” he committed to making daily cold calls from 2 to 4 p.m.
Initially, this approach seemed effective. However, his responsibilities as an entrepreneur made it challenging to adhere to a strict schedule. Despite his efforts, maintaining this routine became untenable due to various interruptions.

Consider a study by Google a few years ago, aiming to encourage employee exercise. In this study, participants were divided into two groups. One group adhered to a rigid routine of working out at 6 p.m. daily, while another group exercised flexibly. Surprisingly, the flexible group demonstrated a higher likelihood of sustaining their exercise routine after incentives were removed.
Similarly, the LinkedIn user’s experience highlights the limitations of rigid routines. Unlike routines, flexible practices allow individuals to adapt to unforeseen circumstances while pursuing their goals. Ryan Holiday emphasizes the importance of flexibility, suggesting that practices are lifelong pursuits rather than mere routines.
In conclusion, while routines have their merits, they can be challenging to maintain consistently. Flexible practices, on the other hand, offer adaptability and resilience in the face of disruptions, ultimately leading to greater success in achieving long-term goals.
