A Complete Guide to Table Mountain Cableway Tickets and Pricing

A Complete Guide to Table Mountain Cableway Tickets and Pricing

What’s the best gift you can give yourself on your birthday? A ride to the top of one of the world’s most iconic landmarks — for free. That’s right. Table Mountain’s Cable Car offers South African residents a free return ticket during their birthday month, and at SFI.COZA online magazine, we think it’s one of the most underrated specials in Cape Town.

But this is more than just a free ride. It’s a chance to see your city in a way most Capetonians still haven’t. And it’s time we changed that.

@tablemountainca

  • Birthday Special: South Africans ride free during their birthday month.
  • Cable Card: R850 for unlimited rides all year.
  • Timing matters: Check weather and plan for fewer crowds.
  • The ride itself is the reward: 360° views of Cape Town in 5 minutes.
  • History runs deep: Open since 1929, still iconic.

Table Mountain isn’t just Cape Town’s backdrop; it’s our pride. That flat-topped giant is a World Heritage Site, a symbol of home, and one of the New7Wonders of Nature. Yet, ask around, and you’ll find countless locals who have never been up the cable car.

Some blame the steep ticket prices. Others say they’ll “do it one day.” But here’s the truth: you haven’t really experienced Cape Town until you’ve looked down on the city from the top of Table Mountain.

So when does the Cable Car Birthday Special give you a free chance to go? You’d be crazy not to take it.

Important: Tickets must be collected from the Lower Station before 2:30pm. Don’t rock up late, or you’ll miss out.

For those not riding on their birthday, here’s what it costs (prices could still be higher than this):

Standard Tickets (July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026)

  • Online Adult Return: R450
  • Online Child Return (4-17 years): R225
  • Ticket Office Adult Return: R490
  • Ticket Office Child Return (4-17 years): R250

Discounts and Special Offers

  • Birthday Fast Track Upgrade: Available to SA citizens with a valid ID at the ticket office for a discounted rate.

Where to Buy Tickets

  • Online: For standard tickets and some specials, buy through the official Table Mountain Aerial Cableway website or Webtickets
  • Ticket Office: At the Cableway’s Lower Station for standard and some discounted tickets.
  • Fast Track Tickets: Purchased at the Lower or Top Station Ticket Offices.

Important Notes

  • Prices are subject to change, and the pricing mentioned here is valid from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026.
  • Children under 4 years old travel for free.
  • Consider downloading the official Table Mountain Aerial Cableway app to check weather conditions and queue times before your visit.

Yes, it’s pricey. But that’s where the Cable Card comes in.

Tired of complaining about the cost? Here’s the hack: the Cable Card. For R950 a year, locals get unlimited rides, one return trip per day, for 12 months from purchase. That means you can go up for sunrise hikes, sunset drinks, or spontaneous Saturday trips, without ever worrying about tickets again.

No refunds, no excuses, but all the views you want. For Capetonians, it’s easily one of the best-value deals out there.

Timing makes or breaks your cable car trip.

  • Summer (Nov–Feb): Warm, long days, but crowded. Book early.
  • Spring & Autumn: Perfect balance, mild weather, fewer tourists, fynbos in bloom.
  • Winter (Jun–Aug): Misty, cold, but magical. And you’ll have the mountain to yourself.

Pro tip from SFI.COZA: always check the real-time weather update on the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway website. If the Cape Doctor is blowing, you’re not going up.

The ride itself is an experience. The floor rotates, giving you 360° views of Cape Town, Robben Island, Lion’s Head, and the endless Atlantic. It takes just five minutes to reach the summit, but the memory lasts forever.

At the top, you’ll find:

  • Walking trails for all fitness levels.
  • A WiFi lounge for a quick coffee and photo upload.
  • Restaurants and kiosks with views worth every rand.
  • Hidden spots to just sit, breathe, and take it all in.

It’s not just sightseeing. It’s a reminder of why Cape Town is unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Forget the stress of parking. Here are two easy ways:

  • MyCiTi Bus: Affordable, frequent, and drops you near the Lower Station.
  • City Sightseeing Red Bus: Adds history and culture to your trip, with Table Mountain as a highlight stop.

Both are easier than fighting for a parking bay on Tafelberg Road.

Before 1929, the only way up was to hike and few dared. Plans for railways and funiculars failed, blocked by wars. Then in 1926, Norwegian engineer Trygve Stromsoe pitched the cable car. Construction began, and in 1929 the dream became reality.

Almost a century later, the cableway has carried more than 30 million visitors and still holds a perfect safety record.

After soaking up the mountain, head to Foresters Arms in Newlands. Grab a drink, a meal, and let the views sink in. Table Mountain isn’t just a tourist attraction. It’s part of our identity. Experiencing it from the top is a rite of passage.

Capetonians love to say “one day I’ll go up.” But one day never comes unless you make it happen. Table Mountain isn’t just for tourists — it’s for us too. And if you’re lucky enough to get a free ticket on your birthday, don’t waste it.
